Climber Story: Joshua Unterman
To start, tell us a little bit about yourself
Hello, my name is Joshua, I am 41 years old. I am a certified orthotic technician, I make braces for people. Custom Leg braces, knee braces, and a few elbow braces. I got into the field of orthotics because I wanted to make my own devices. I wear a custom set of walking shoes and also I made myself a custom set of climbing shoe. Both sets work well for their intended purpose.
How did you start climbing?
I was introduced to climbing by an invite from my friend and now coach Brent Kobs. Brent invited me to a day of adaptive climbing at the Oakland Power Company. I had never tried climbing before, but I had a great time and the rest is history.
What impact has climbing had on your life?
Climbing has a great positive impact on my life. It gives me the exercise that I need. Climbing has a great social aspect and you get to see some really nice places.
What are some other things you do that you find most fulfilling?
I have an MFA in Applied Craft and Design. I enjoy making art. I do some simple woodworking, I take pictures and I throw pottery on a potters wheel. I give hand made gifts to my friends for special occasions.
If you could tell the world one thing, what would it be?
Be kind to your neighbor.
Favorite thing about Dynamite Starfish?
Besides the awesome name!!!! ..... the soft fabric that the T-shirts are printed on.
Is there something you're working on that you'd like to tell our community about? We love a good story.
I am helping to make adaptive climbing visible in San Francisco and the Bay Area Region. I hope that one day that adaptive climbing will be included in more gyms on a regular basis. There are adaptive climbers out there, but not all gyms know what to do when Adaptive climbers show up. But good news, adaptive climbers are just like regular climbers, only difference is that we have more gear to haul.
