Climber Story: Eva Skell - Dynamite Starfish

To start, tell us a little bit about yourself

Hi, I'm Eva (like whateva)! I am a 30 year old trans-non-binary human. I use they/them pronouns.

How did you start climbing?

I started climbing after a big life change when I was 27. I’d wanted to try it for years but was held back by my own fears and anxieties. After my life turned upside down, I started making it a point to do things that made me uncomfortable. One of which was to go climbing by myself. Like many of us, I was hooked immediately.

What impact has climbing had on your life?

I feel joy that I have never experienced before. Climbing is a journey in self-discovery and spirituality to me. I’ve also found a community that I feel at place in; something that I had not felt before.

What are some other things you do that you find most fulfilling?

I am an artist and an advocate for LGBTQ+ awareness. I am also an avid home cook — I like to say that cooking is my favorite expression of creativity. On top of those, I am passionate about nutrition and enjoy helping friends and family better understand food and how their overall health relates to what they consume.

If you could tell the world one thing, what would it be?

Be curious, be bold, and be forgiving.

Favorite thing about Dynamite Starfish?

Everything! I think Leslie has an awesome attitude, the designs are stellar, and I love that DS is about giving back and sustainability.

Is there something you're working on that you'd like to tell our community about? We love a good story.

I’m working on my mental training! A year ago I was struggling with RED-S — I was overtraining and under fueling, and its effects were pronouncedly physical and mental. I hit a tipping point and found myself at the doctor’s office facing a number of health issues. With the help of my partner and friends, I started working towards recovery. At this point, I’ve recovered, but I’ve noticed lasting mental effects, and I’m working on improving my mindset. I’ve seen more progress in my climbing as I’ve focused on the mental side of things than I have when I’ve simply focused on the physical side. I’m optimistic that my 13a project will go this year because of it!

Eva chooses not to use any social media channels, so you'll just have to met them out on the rocks!
