Climber Story: Carlos Tkacz
To start, tell us a little bit about yourself
Hey, I'm Carlos! I am a teacher and PhD student in Literature currently based in Vegas. Before starting this program, my partner Steph and I lived off-grid for five years.
How did you start climbing?
It was an accident! A friend of mine discovered the climbing gym in my home town, and we went to check it out. It was love at first sight, and I have been climbing ever since!
What impact has climbing had on your life?
It would be hard to overstate the impact climbing has had on me. First of all, it has become a key way that I keep mentally and physically healthy, both through the physical effort required and because it has given me the chance to spend a lot of time outdoors in a variety of environments. Second, the discipline required to train and improve has crossed over into pretty much all areas of my life. Finally, the community has been a major source of joy, support, and inspiration for me!
What are some other things you do that you find most fulfilling?
Teaching and studying literature are very important to me, perhaps even more so than climbing (by which I mean, balance is important to me. Climbing itself is not enough but helps to balance out the rest of my life). I am of the opinion that teaching is the best job in the entire world, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!
If you could tell the world one thing, what would it be?
Read literature! Help others!
Favorite thing about Dynamite Starfish?
That they focus on the fun part of climbing!
Is there something you're working on that you'd like to tell our community about? We love a good story.
I am currently working on my fourth scifi novel (I have self-published three others). I will hopefully have it done soon!
