Climber Story: Ravi Singh - Dynamite Starfish

To start, tell us a little bit about yourself

Hi, my name is Ravi Singh (he/him). I am an engineer working on my Neuroscience PhD at USC with a concentration on hearing and communication.

How did you start climbing?

My friend in college had a crush on one of the gym staff and didn't want to show up alone so they brought me. I was wholly unaware of this until I'd been climbing there for a month. They ended up falling in love. I found love too! I haven't stopped climbing since!

What impact has climbing had on your life?

Climbing has changed my belief system and how I view various issues and life paths in this world. It has made me much more open minded and has thrown me in a completely different trajectory than what I saw myself doing growing up.

I grew up in a community that didn't value the outdoors, so climbing was a big shift in mindset from that. I have loved other activities in life, but I was swept away with how incredible climbing made me feel and the community it introduced me to.

What are some other things you do that you find most fulfilling?

I enjoy critical thinking and using that skill to help try and improve the world. I think I still have a long way to go before I make a strong impact, but the process is still fulfilling.

Is there something you're working on that you'd like to tell our community about? We love a good story.

I started up a little Instagram many years back that has grown into a wonderful community aimed at helping bring in more people of color into climbing. The group is based in Southern Arizona. We put a lot of volunteered time in to helping the community and any support is welcome! Join our community and we would love to see you at one of our events. Check us out at climbingincolor.org or on Instagram at @climbingincolor.

You can find Ravi on Facebook at Ravinder Singh or reach out to him via Climbing In Color (links above).

We hope you have enjoyed these sneak peeks into climbers' lives. We're on a mission to share diverse stories about rock climbing. Let's push the boundaries of who we know as climbers. Let's use our energy and passion for the outdoors to love our environment and inspire one another.

Have someone you think we should feature? Send us a message and let us know!

Until next time!
