Climber Story: Lori Walz - Dynamite Starfish

To start, tell us a little bit about yourself

I am 56 and married to my hubby Bryon for 37 years. I have 3 kids, 2 grandchildren, and 3 dogs. I work in medical sales.

How did you start climbing?

I started climbing late in life at around 50.

What impact has climbing had on your life?

Climbing has been amazing! I would have never imagined at this age I would be traveling all over to climb at different places. It has taught me to put myself out of my comfort zone and to overcome my fears. Several years ago, I took a long fall leading a route and had a minor injury. The fall messed with my mind and I could not lead again until this year when I finally decided to push past what I thought I couldn’t do and face my fear. Climbing has made me realize that I am not too old to try new things!

What are some other things you do that you find most fulfilling?

Besides rock climbing, I love to ice climb and my hubby and I go canyoneering a lot. Two years ago, I started power lifting to keep my strength up and found that, besides strength, it has given me self confidence to continue doing all the things I love. I am passionate about dogs and volunteer with Healing Hearts Rescue where I foster and do medical transports.

If you could tell the world one thing, what would it be?

You are NEVER too old to give something new a try! Don't use your age as an excuse.

Favorite thing about Dynamite Starfish?

I love the variety!!

Is there something you're working on that you'd like to tell our community about? We love a good story.

I am working on marking off my bucket list. I have summited the Grand Teton and climbed Devils Tower. Two more items on my bucket list are to climb in Yosemite which I am doing in September and compete in a power lifting competition which I am going to do in February.
