Climber Story: Alina Grzywacz - Dynamite Starfish

To start, tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Alina Grzywacz and I am 24 years old. I got my BS in Geology but have currently been working full time as a Brewer! I have a dog named Hot Dog and a cat named Munch, and they are my pride and joy!

How did you start climbing?

I was first introduced to climbing through my boo, and very soon after I started going to the climbing wall on my college campus and later to my home gym, Center 45 in Boone, North Carolina! I am so grateful for finding this amazing sport through my boyfriend, but my love for it is what really kept me coming back (he can’t have all the credit lol).

What impact has climbing had on your life?

I have struggled with depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember and I was very timid about opening up about it and expressing how I feel. Climbing has not only provided me a physical outlet for my struggles, but has also provided me a mental outlet. I am consistently improving my self esteem and growing more comfortable with myself. Climbing has improved this and much more!

What are some other things you do that you find most fulfilling?

When I’m not working or climbing, I’m usually with my dog and reading. I have also been teaching myself to code!

If you could tell the world one thing, what would it be?

Mental health is important for every single person, no matter if you are diagnosed with a mental illness or not. It is so important to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Whether it be climbing or something else, go do something for you!

Favorite thing about Dynamite Starfish?

I love its emphasis on inclusion and providing a space for everyone in the climbing community! And I love how quirky and fun it looks.

Is there something you're working on that you'd like to tell our community about? We love a good story.

I have very recently started a blog to discuss mental health and climbing. It is primarily a cathartic means for me, but if I can share my story with someone through it, then that would be pretty cool. You can find it at sadsends.blog
